Singapore Math Essential Math is a series of two books and is written especially for the kindergarten student. It reinforces concepts and essential skills relevant for this age, enhances their understanding of the things around them, and motivates them to explore and learn more. There are useful ideas at the bottom of each page for parents and teachers to introduce the concepts concretely before doing the workbook page, and for extending the concept after doing the page. The front and back page of one page can constitute a days lesson.
Category Description for Essential Math (Kindergarten)
It's hard to get more basic and solid than this program. The nononsense black and white worksheet format might deceive you, but fight it! They are engaging, with straightforward teaching instructions (concept, introduction with manipulatives, how to use page) at the bottom of each. The scope and sequence is similar to Singapore's Earlybird Math and designed to prepare the student for Primary Math. It can be used as a supplement to Earlybird or as a standalone program. Many household items are used as manipulatives, but the few specific ones suggested are listed below (balance and pattern blocks are only referred to a very few times). ~ Janice

5.0 / 5.09 Reviews5 Stars4 Stars3 Stars2 Stars1 Star90000My 5yearold son went through this workbook and loved it! Some parts he just zoomed through (him begging to do multiple pages in one day) and others we spent more time on doing only one page or one teaching suggestion a day The teaching suggestions on the bottom of each page were ideal for those concepts that we needed a bit more practice with Day by day I decided whether or not we needed to do them There was hardly any prep work involved Most of the time we just used teddy bear counters or alllink cubes along with some 3x5 index cards for flash cards and paper clips to measure with The black and white was great as my son would sometimes choose to color on the page After he felt comfortable with recognizing and writing the numbers 010 I let him skip around in the book None of the concepts were too hard for him I wasn't sure I needed a curriculum for kindergarten math as we are pretty laid back homeschoolers but my son found this fun and I was able to identify some areas we could work on For instance I thought he was confident with his numbers 010 because he can count to 10 and he learned to write the numbers in his handwriting book but he wasn't really recognizing the numbers 810 on their own until we started practicing them in the book and using the teaching suggestions It also became clear that he didn't know how to count backwards so we started counting down for hide and seek and soon he was doing it like a pro! Some math programs are a lot more involvedand they cost a lot more I was pleased with what my son learned he loved it and I see him thinking more mathematically as he looks around That's all I really wanted in a first math book On to Essential Math Kindergarten B Was this review helpful? We LOVE this book! I bought it for my 5 year old son for his Kindergarten year We had tried a couple of other math programs and they were just so busy in looks and content This book is so straightforward and simple in a good way! The pages are black and white and neatly laid out I used to think this would be boring but it actually feels so much more organized and we can actually see and understand what needs done It is definitely beginner level and my son finds much of it easy but I have seen a lot of improvement in his ability to recognize and write numbers as well as the other skills covered in this book My 4 year old begs to do pages too so I'm going to have to order her own book! If you are looking for a gentle straightforward no fuss introduction to math for your 45 year old look no further Oh and the price is great! Was this review helpful? Yes (2) No (0)

Excellent Kindergarten Math ProgramBooks A & B work well together to give you a complete year of math for your child in Kindergarten. I knew I wanted to use Singapore Math for 1st8th grades so it made sense to start with these in Kindergarten. The lessons for each page are printed at the bottom of the worksheet if parents need help with teaching points. Two of my children have been through this set and both did well. I'd recommend to anyone looking for an inexpensive math program for Kindergarten. Was this review helpful? Yes (1) No (0)

LokkerMamaSo far we are enjoying this book. My daughter started it in preK. It's pretty basic but, since I'm schooling 2 this year, it's something she can figure out and do easily on her own. i will say that if you're child excels at math and has her numbers memorized this will be very easy. You may want to move to book B. Was this review helpful? Yes (1) No (0)

enjoying this program with my 5 and 6 year olds. My oldest is a hands on learner, so doing the work with the manipulatives is a must for her. I like how easy it is to use, and how it is mastery based. We just set a timer for 20 minutes and do as much or as little as we want. It's very flexible. Would definitely recommend! Fits our needsI got this for my kindergartener to do while I did 1st grade math with his older sister. It's perfect for the job. It takes maybe five minutes to introduce a concept, then gives me ten minutes or so to work with my daughter while my son completes the page. He's been making connections with real life events, too, which is great! (Ex. finding the similarities and differences in the fruit bowl or his toys, ect.) Was this review helpful? Yes (0) No (0)

It's my understanding that they are 2 separate curriculums since the Early Bird book comes with the teachers manual. With the Essential books, everything you need to teach the concept is at the bottom of the page. We didn't hardly touch them and used them more as a supplementary item. I ended up using Abeka Math instead.

No, Essentials Math A and Essentials Math B are different and their own kindergarten math; Earlybird is different and not part of the set. I highly recommend Essentials A and B for kindergarten (depending on your child, of course) both our son and daughter have enjoyed Essentials. Reply
