Singapore Earlybird Math really works for us. My 5-year-old daughter responds well to the fun illustrations and colorful, yet not cluttered, pages. The way it introduces concepts is excellent. For example, it has the child count objects to see that 2 and 2 are 4, then progresses to writing it in a number sentence of 2+2=4. My daughter easily learned addition without even realizing it! It's so much better than just forcing her to memorize the math facts. When she wants to figure out a number concept in everyday life, I see her using Singapore-type methods to come up with a solution. She'll draw two sets of circles in a notebook to figure out an addition problem that, without Singapore, I'm sure would be far too hard for her at this age. I've heard some say they didn't like that Singapore does not repeat the same concepts over and over or that there isn't extensive practice, but my daughter has not seemed to need it. In fact I'm sure she would be bored with repetition once she understands a concept. So far she says math is one of her favorite subjects. I appreciate that teacher's notes are at the bottom of each page. While they're meant for a classroom, I have had no problem easily adapting them for homeschool. The notes give activity ideas to bring the math concepts to life.

Singapore Math Early Bird takes your child on a journey into the world of mathematics. Your child will learn the hows and whys of math. But most importantly they will learn to think mathematically. At the beginning of each lesson there are hands on activities to engage your child in the world of math. Following the activity there is a short lesson with a workpage to complete. I would recommend the Earlybird 1A and 1B for a 6 year old child. We have utilized this curriculum in our homeschool and our child has developed a love for mathematics.

Fun! Bright! Inexpensive! A solid introduction to math concepts! What's not to love?!! I've used this series with my mathematically inclined child beginning at age 3. When his hand was unable to write the letters, we did the pages orally or I acted as his scribe. His siblings (so far!) start the program at age 4, and finish at the end of kindergarten.

This is the BEST Kindergarten math program I have seen. These books have everything right at your fingertips. They also break the program into two years, instead of just one year. This makes is perfect for those starting a younger child (around 4 years of age) on math. The books are perfect with progression as the 1A books requires very little writing (since a younger child would not be ready to write) and grow from there. The program helps children not only "do" math, but "understand" math. They know what to do and why for adding, subtracting, categorizing, etc. The pages are now overwhelming and each concept builds upon the next. The pages can be done in 5 - 15 minute segments - again perfect for a younger child. By far, the BEST math program I have seen for the younger child. Parent/teacher prompts at the bottom of the page are also wonderful as they give you many ideas for enhancing the lesson with manipulatives and further questions. For the price, this program can not be beat.
