Description

Did you know that several of the most famous Civil War leaders went to West Point? Some had been friends and comrades with experience in the Mexican War. This fact often permitted commanders to know each other's strengths and weaknesses in combat. Now think about the new technology of the era: trains, mines, steam-powered ships, repeating rifles, hot air balloons, etc. This required tactical adjustments by the commanders. Who were these men and how did their leadership shift the war? Meet them as they face off in 11 battles. While this is certainly a reference book with a lot of detail, it reads well and shows both sides of the events. I found the maps especially useful in picturing the battles. Loads of photos and illustrations add to the visual appeal. The photos of troops at rest playing cards or reading newspapers added something humanizing to the usual battle scenes. This is the sort of book you have in a home library, but maybe on a higher shelf as the battle scenes may be too graphic for younger students. ~Sara

Publisher's Description of Great Commanders of the American Civil War

Who were the greatest commanders of the American Civil War, and what made them so? In The Great Commanders of the American Civil War, the best military leaders of both sides are pitted against each other and their strengths and weaknesses examined – Robert E. Lee versus George Meade at Gettysburg, Ulysses S. Grant versus Albert Sidney Johnston at Shiloh, William Tecumseh Sherman versus John Bell Hood in the March to the Sea, along with eight other pairs. The book also explores a decisive battle between each pair of adversaries, highlighting the decisions made and why the battle was won. Each featured battle includes a contextual introduction, a description of the action, and an analysis of the aftermath. A specially commissioned color map illustrating the dispositions and movement of forces brings the subject to life and helps the reader grasp the course of each battle. Featuring full-color illustrations, paintings and photographs alongside the battle maps, The Great Commanders of the American Civil War is a fascinating comparison of the greatest Confederate and Union military leaders.
