One of the best investments I've made into our homeschool - I can't believe I haven't reviewed these before! My hsed kids are 5.5 and 3, and we ALL love Cuisenaire rods. I bought them to do a bit of pre-math last year, which didn't end up happening, but for some weird reason, the kids fell in love with the rods. They were building staircases and trains and lining them up even without any instruction - they are thoroughly intuitive, and I believe they were secretly beginning to learn many math principles at the same time. I ended up buying this as a second set - someone passed their secondhand ones along to me, which is a great way to build up a larger collection (which you'll want if you have more than one child using them). I also made an inexpensive "rod tray" using a small dollar-store wooden tray inside which I glued a 1-cm grid I printed on glossy photo paper. They love lining the rods up square with the sides of the box. This year, I've started Miquon Orange with my daughter using the rods and it's great that she's already so familiar with them. I am looking forward to using them over and over during our homeschool adventure! One note: I don't know if it's because we have rods from three different sets (the older ones I was given, plus 2 I bought from Rainbow), but these don't work as I'd hoped with our bucket balance. I was hoping the balance could help provide a simple lesson in rod equality - i.e. "orange rod equals orange rod," or "two oranges plus two reds equals (whatever!) on the other side." But the weights don't work out and the same color does not always have the same weight and the weights are not always correctly proportional. Just be aware if you are planning this use for the rods that it may not work - though if you buy all-new rods, it might work for you! (p.s. so we use Funtastic Frogs instead for a "weights" manipulative)
