Beneath the Sky of an Angry God
Slip into the shoes of those who were forced to leave their homes to march across the 1,000-mile trek to the Oklahoma Territory. Daniel Sweetwater is a 16-year-old Delaware Indian living with the Cherokees. The year is 1838, and he and his father, who is a preacher, are setting out with the remnants of the Cherokee tribe. The long, treacherous journey is accompanied with cruel white men and harsh weather. These elements combined cause Daniel's heart to harden towards God and the white men. However, God in His mercy brings friendships into Daniel's life to help him through an unexpected tragedy and the many injustices that happen to his people at the hands of the white men. In the end, it is these friendships that keep him from taking justice into his own hands. Fiction is a wonderful way to teach your children about our nation's history - the good and bad. The Cherokee Trail of Tears is the backdrop to this heart-wrenching story of injustice. - elise
