Category Description for Ballad of America CD’s
The history of the United States is told vividly through a wealth of traditional folk songs. Their rich lyrics often tell a story that reveals what life was like in the “olden days.” The traditional songs featured on these CDs are sung by Matthew Sabetella, a very talented musician (by my standards!). A historical note for each song is printed in the CD booklet, and if you wish to sing along, you can go to their website to print off the lyrics. I found this folk song collection to be very enjoyable! These songs from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries reflect the lives of pioneers, sailors, lumberjacks, immigrants, ’49ers, farmers, slaves, soldiers, cowboys, and railroaders. Some of the songs are familiar tunes you’ve probably heard in the past, but reading the history behind the songs makes them even more enjoyable. These traditional folksongs have been passed down from generation to generation, and I hope you’ll pass them down to your children, as well! – elise
