This is an amazingly well-rounded, well-crafted, and well-organized curriculum that supplies three years of art for a very low cost. Homeschooling authors Patteye Carlson (certified art teacher) and Jean Soyke (who holds a Master’s Degree in Education) have combined their talents to create a complete, foundational art program that’s easy to use, flexible, and very instructive. The program lays a firm foundation in each concept and skill area, then steadily builds as students progress through the lessons and years. A total of 105 lessons are provided to use over a three-year span (book is divided into Year A, Year B and Year C), 35 lessons per year, one lesson per week. The 35 lessons in each year’s curriculum are divided into 5 units of 7 lessons each. Unit I - Drawing; Unit II - Print-Making; Unit III-Painting; Unit IV - Sculpture; Unit V - Crafts. Each unit uses a variety of media in the projects. Individual lessons focus on art concepts surrounding the basic elements of line, shape/form, color, and texture. Each concept is covered at least once in each year of the curriculum, though the projects and objectives become more complex in successive years. The art concepts in each lesson are taught by experience - the child is led through observing or hands-on activities that demonstrate in a concrete way the ideas presented. Then, an art project meaningfully integrates the concept in a creative endeavor. The lesson doesn’t end there, though! Each lesson contains questions to help your child evaluate his art project. These are non-judgmental, non-critical questions that encourage him to realistically appraise his finished art work without inhibiting his creativity. All lessons follow a similar format:

  •  Big Idea - the concept being taught
  •  Goal - what the student will do/learn
  •  Main Element(s) - line, shape/form, color, or texture
  •  Materials - what you need for the lesson and art project
  •  Strategy - the “teaching” part of the lesson - discussion of terms, viewing suggested works of art (not included) that illustrate the goal/concept, discussing art styles/ movements, preparatory demos, etc.
  •  Work period - describes the art project procedure and result
  •  Questions for Evaluation and Review - questions to ask the student to help him evaluate his finished artwork and questions reviewing the concepts presented
  • This curriculum is a work of art itself! We highly recommend it!

Lynn E. from NY wrote the following on 06/09/2008:
If you want to go beyond coloring and finger painting for younger children, this curriculum will get you started. The projects are simple. The materials inexpensive. But the kids will be introduced to art concepts and vocabulary that will expand your children's idea of art. The objectives are clear and the price is right--3 years of art lessons in each volume. Highly recommended.
