This book is full of worksheets to drill students on the rules of spelling. It has worksheets for 150 days and incorporates scripture from the Bible, including KJV, NKJV, and NIV versions. One spelling rule is introduced each week and until is has covered many of the most prominent spelling rules. The book then supplies short, simple daily drills to helps students memorize the rules. These lessons should be completed quickly and easily in no more than ten minutes a day. There are no lists and no tests, but every tenth day there is a review of the previously learned rules. Students then apply the rules by completing scripture, puzzles, and sentences. Most of the answers are somewhat obvious because the activities give a word box or list to draw answers from and the rest can usually be figured out by process of elimination, but a key is provided. The book focuses only on common spelling rules and does not provide drills for their exceptions. Once students are comfortable with a rule, they can look in the back for a list of exceptions. A simple way to enhance spelling for those who need it. ~ Rachel S.

Faith N. H. from GA wrote the following on 11/12/2007:
This is the best spelling program I have used in the 10 years I have been homeschooling. I have tried many programs over the years with my struggling spellers and found that though they may have learned the required spelling words, they did not retain what they learned. Apples is easy to use for the teacher and student, works for all kinds of learning styles, no teacher preparation time necessary, useful for anyone 10 years old and up, and is a great price. My children begin to spell well after they begin to use this program. I only wish they had Apples for elementary students.
Kimberly C. from Raphine, VA wrote the following on 07/02/2010:
I have a 16 year old son who is a terrible speller. Woe is me! With the eyes of the world expecting homeschoolers to exceed in all academic endeavors above and beyond what the mass public schools are spitting out, I'm sorry to say I felt the pressure. I read all the advice, tried games, and, alas, his spelling still left much to be desired. With other programs, he would learn for the spelling test only, or words he could spell today would be misspelled tomorrow. Taking words from his writing was frustrating-for him and for me. Along came Apples. I highly recommend this spelling book for several reasons: it requires no teacher prep, it is not demeaning work for an older student--which is a big problem when you need a structured course of action and your child is well past the age of most spelling programs--, and it actually helps. No, it is not a miracle cure, and my son is not suddenly a perfect speller. However, the lessons are short, and he does not complain about doing them. Repetition and review is built in. He needs the repetition, but would 'tune out' if the lessons were too laborious or juvenile. Its focus is actually on the common, and sometimes simple, misspelled words. When I think about it, these are the words that I most want him to know. This is not a text for a good speller, but I would hardly think you'd be looking for a spelling program for an older child if he/she did not have spelling difficulties. There are no spelling tests, and some of the pages incorporate Scripture, as in using verses for fill-in-the-blank. It seems to work in a very subtle way, exposing the student to problem words repeatedly, without making a big deal about it in the process. Don't be fooled by its simplicity, as I think that is a plus for my son, who has little patience and attention span for spelling.
