Each letter of the alphabet is assigned a dollar value according to its place in the alphabet - a = $0.01, b = $0.02, all the way up through z, which equals $0.26. A one dollar word then, is any word whose letters add up to exactly $1.00. Kids will enjoy figuring out the answers to these riddles, which are all $1.00 words, as well as experimenting with other words to see if they fit the bill.
