Writing About Reading

All > Reading / Literature > READING RESPONSES / BOOK REPORTS > Writing About Reading

This journal encourages students to think critically about the books they read. It has room to document responses to over 30 different books. Inside the front and back covers are spaces for children to create their own word bank. The journal is comprised primarily of blank journaling pages, with a two page spread being used for each book. The left hand page is split in half, and there are lines for students to comment about the book before they read it (questions they have) and after they read it (ideas they have). On the bottom of the page they rate the book. The right hand page provides blank boxes for an illustration and caption. Below the boxes are more lines, one to write the question or guide the student is using, and several for them to write a response on. Lists of guide questions are found in the back of the book and ask for different information about setting, plot, and characters. When you first begin journaling with the students, you may wish to assign a book and pick an appropriate question for their response, but as they get used to the process they may be able to both choose their own books as well as pick a suitable question to answer through their journaling. The teacher's guide provides lots of useful information for successfully incorporating the journal into your routine. - Melissa
