What takes up less shelf-space than a notebook, helps extend the enjoymentof favorite picture books with fun activities, actively involves pre-readersand beginning readers in exploring the content of stories, promotes high-levelthinking skills, and is fully jelly-proof?

If you guessed the title above this description, you're not only a masterof the obvious, but also 100% correct! Did I mention inexpensive? And, most ofthese are for picture books not covered by those "other" literature guidesfor youngers. My sample is for The Empty Pot by Demi. The sturdy, laminated card is double-sided. The front side begins with a summary of thebook. These are followed by "Read Together" Strategies for the book;suggestions for points of discussion before, during, and after reading; then aseries of cross-curricular activities (mostly on the card back). There areseven activities to celebrate the book:

  • locate the setting (China) on a map or globe and discuss (Social Studies)
  • have your child retell the story (memory, oral language) then make up astory with a similar situation (applying, creating, verbal-linguistic)
  • make a paper flower bouquet (Art)
  • plant flower seeds as the main character did and tend the plants (Science)
  • make flower pot treats with ice cream, cookies, and other supplies (lifeskills, following directions)
  • create paper plate fans similar to the one the emperor had, using scenesfrom the book as decoration (memory, creative, art)
  • pretend to be the emperor and think of someone who deserves recognition inyour family or town. Work together to write a proclamation honoring the person, and reward with a small gift.
  • At the bottom of the back side are six other suggested picture books toenjoy with themes similar to The Empty Pot. Some have a similarsetting, others have like themes of courage and honesty, and some share theflower-planting/growing aspect. If you include these other selections, it wouldbe interesting to compare and contrast them to the main read and concoct yourown activities for each. I like these because they're inexpensive, durable, have a reasonable number of diverse activities, and include correlativeliterature to extend the experience.
