Karate Kakuro

All > Logic / Thinking Skills > SPECIFIC LOGIC PUZZLE ACTIVITIES > Sudoku & Sudoku-type Puzzles > Karate Kakuro

You might be looking for a different number puzzle for some variety; Kakuro offers a nice change from Sudoku. In Sudoku, you strategically place the number one through nine, so that no number is repeated or duplicated horizontally or vertically. Kakuro is similar in that you only use the numbers one through nine once in each row or column, but takes it a step further and uses basic math to help you get the numbers in the correct position. Small black triangles at the top of each column or beginning of each row tell you the sum of the numbers to be placed. The playing area looks much like a crossword puzzle and numbers crisscross, just like the letters in a crossword puzzle. This series is graded like the levels of karate with White Belt holding the easiest puzzles and Black Belt the most difficult. If you have never tried these puzzles before, you might want to begin easy just to get the idea and work progressively up to Black Belt. I do these puzzles when I want a change from Sudoku or Tridoku. Kakuro sharpens logic skills and hones basic math thinking. ~ Donna
