Lapbooks might not be your first thought when it comes to teaching your children about managing money, but maybe they should be. Hands-on activities giving you lots of time to talk through the principles and eye-appealing visual reminders to keep them fresh might be just what is needed to internalize these life principles. Lapbooks in two grade level groupings cover much of the same material at age-appropriate levels while the high school level Notebook Journal gets more detailed, more complex, and broader in terms of coverage (and much less lapbook-y).

Both Money Talk (Grades K-6) and Money Essentials (Grades 5-8) share the same general format and options. Instructions for compiling the lapbooks are written directly to the student and include folder prep, mini-book prep/placement, and needed supplies. A Study Guide is provided for the parent/teacher that walks/talks through each booklet discussing the concepts behind the book. For instance, for the booklet "Where Does Money Really Come From?" the younger guide discusses how coins are minted and bills printed by giving locations of mints and print locations while the older guide covers the same info but expands on it by talking about mint marks. Other sections have the same sort of age-appropriate expansion of information. Coverage found in both levels includes preparing booklets on these topics: money words, where does money come from, where does money really come from, money symbols, forms of money, coins, paper bills, banking words, banks, checks, check cards, jobs, paychecks, time sheets, allowance sheets, budgeting, envelope system, bills, money does not equal love, interesting facts, spending and counting. The older level adds a couple of topics history of money and savings accounts. The topics in each level are grade appropriate which means you could work on these as a family with each having his own grade level book or work from one level for the entire family and make your own adjustments for individual students.

Printed sets include the lapbook instructions, printed copies (on color paper as well as full-color copies) needed for all booklets, and the parent's Study Guide. CDs include all the same pages in pdf format allowing you to make copies as needed for your family. Extra needed supplies include colored file folders (we sell these), glue sticks, and miscellaneous office/school supplies (i.e. scissors, staplers, colored pencils etc.) If using the CDs you'll also need both white copy paper, 24# colored paper, and white cardstock.

The high school level Real Money Talk Notebook Journal provides the opportunity for the student to cover textual content, answer questions, fill out charts, prepare budgets, and other exercises all in the same book. Practical exercises are provided with each section. Coverage includes: earning (finding, applying, after being hired), banking (savings, checking, statements, online), budgeting (inflation, real life), bills (debt, credit identity theft, loans, avoiding financial disaster), credit cards, financing college, and investing.

These courses from Knowledge Box Central provide an opportunity for the whole family to work together to make sure these important topics are discussed and family values are passed down. ~ Janice
