No lack of substance here, the course jumps right into the heart of our government by examining documents that influenced or revealed the thinking of our political leaders. The course consists of three components: Readings, Course in American Government, and Teacher’s Manual. The Teacher’s Manual includes lesson plans for 14 weeks, assuming 4 days per week. Lesson plans are addressed to the student so that a he can plan his time himself. The Teacher’s Manual ties Readings to corresponding sections of the Course. It also contains 3 topics for papers, review questions with answers for each chapter in the Course, review questions with answers for many sections of Readings, 3 quizzes, and 3 tests.
As I said, this is a meaty course. By the end of Week 1, the student will have read and memorized “The Gettysburg Address,” will have read Federalist 1 and Federalist 9, been exposed to ancient Greek thoughts on democracy and Thomas Paine’s Common Sense, and, if they have time, read the “Magna Carta.” Over the course of the semester, the student will read four other Federalist papers, a speech from Calvin Coolidge on the 150th anniversary of the “Declaration of Independence”, the “Articles of Confederation,” Articles 1 and 2 of the “U.S. Constitution” and its Amendments, and parts of speeches by Alexander Stephens, parts of 6 speeches by Abraham Lincoln, and a segment of Democracy in America by Toqueville. The Course book provides background information and interpretation for these Readings.
If you want an in-depth course on American government, this one is hard to beat. ~ Bob
