Complementarian

Also known as "soft" patriarchy, the husband/father is a "servant-leader" in the home. While "equal before God as persons," men and women are "distinct in their manhood and womanhood" as relates to their roles in the home, church and society. More specifically, men alone are given explicit headship and responsibility for primary leadership in the home and church. Even before the fall, Adam was clearly the leader until Eve usurped his authority. Although traditional roles may vary between cultures, women should stay in their functional roles regardless of their abilities. Although women may hold jobs outside the home, they should never directly lead men if it can be avoided. Women are never to teach men in assembly at a church (or elsewhere if it is Biblical or spiritual instruction). The formal organization supporting this view is The Council of Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, formed in 1987. They released a position statement called The Danvers Statement (in 1988) that more fully expresses the rationale, goals, and affirmations of this group. Entire organizations, including denominational groups, have endorsed this view, lending much formal support to this position. A few of the many proponents include John Piper, Wayne Grudem, Elisabeth Elliot, Douglas J. Moo, Beverly LaHaye, Jerry Falwell, R. C. Sproul, J.I. Packer, Carl F. H. Henry and Dorothy Patterson.
