This series tells the fictional story of Elsie Dinsmore, a young lady coming of age in the late 1800’s. The books were bestsellers in their time, and have garnered quite a following in our time as well. In the series, Elsie grows from the tender age of eight to womanhood, all the while presenting a wonderful role model for young girls to follow. Her faith and obedience to God are consistently portrayed, as are the Christian values of patience, long-suffering, love, and diligence. Although my girls say Elsie is “too perfect,” exposure to such an ideal is character-building. We are, after all, to “Be imitators of God,” and look to Jesus as our example. Although we can never attain that ideal, it gives us a goal to work toward. Similarly, the character of Elsie supplies a standard of behavior for girls and young ladies intended to inspire and help build character in them.

I purchased the entire 28 book series of Elsie Dinsmore for myself and my 13 year old daughter. I have read the whole collection and my daughter is very close to finishing. We have enjoyed the adventures of Elsie as well as the "life lessons" to be learned from these beautiful books. They are very well written and delicately cover subjects like falling in love, marriage and raising children and also death of loved ones. If you are looking for good literature, and a way to help develop Godly character in your daughter then I highly recommend reading this collection. The books are very reasonably priced and the covers are beautifully decorated with pictures of "Elsie" through the different stages of her life.
