For your older child who struggles with those variant (deviant?) spellings, Spelling Demons seeks to help. The book is divided into four units of ten lessons. Each two-page lesson contains an average of eight words to study and master. Lessons approach spelling of the words on an individual basis. That is, each word is presented to the student, with pronunciation, then with a strategy for mastering the spelling of that word. A reproducible pronunciation key is included in the book for use with some lessons. After several words are presented, two brief exercises practice them before going on to the next grouping. These vary in format and also use words from other lessons to provide continual review/reinforcement of previously studied words. When all words for the lesson have been studied, a page of additional activities can be used if you feel further reinforcement is needed. These lead the student, via a series of well-contrived questions, through a unique discovery process to further solidify the spellings of the words ("if the u were not after the c in biscuit, how would you have to pronounce the word?"). Answers to all of the lesson exercises follow. Quarterly quizzes follow each group of ten lessons. The oral quiz is given by you. Following this are three other reproducible written quizzes. A Sound to Spelling quiz presents words as pronounced (using dictionary markings) and students provide the right spelling. A General Quiz tests spelling mastery of the words in a variety of ways. A Spelling Rules Quiz tests student understanding of the rules discovered to date. A set of Final Tests covers the whole text.
