Our whole family benefited from using the Greenleaf Guide to the Old Testament last year. It seems to be most beneficial for 1st grade up, but our 4 and 3 year olds enjoyed listening during our family worship times. The passages are selected in chronological order and really help you to get a big picture of the Old Testament. I especially found the portion on the Kings helpful, and their suggestions for charting the kings and whether they were in Judah or Israel. There are also occasional project ideas that help to understand timelines, geography, geneology, etc. There is nothing fancy about this guide, and it really encourages the child's growth in narration. We were amazed to hear our 1st grader "tell back" the passage with so much detail in her own words and emotions. She still recalls stories we read and applies them to situations in our life. The questions are helpful at pointing out some key themes, while not having a denominational agenda. Our family plans to use this every other year and encourages others wanting to have a better understanding of the overall story of the Old Testament to use it as well. The Bible, not the guide, is central, but the guide really helps to lay out the passages while skipping very little and providing helpful background information. We also used the Student's Bible Atlas with this product.

This Old Testament History volume was referred to me by a friend and I love it and have found nothing comparable to it! It is thorough, easy to use, requires no preparation, and is beneficial for all ages. My children knew a lot of Bible stories before beginning this curriculum, but I was looking for an in-depth Bible curriculum through which I could begin to teach the basics of inductive Bible study, as well as implement oral reading skills and listening comprehension. This fit what I was looking for! It is a chronological approach to reading the OT and is divided into manageable daily reading segments, followed by questions presented in the book. I chose to purchase inexpensive copies of the NASB for each of our children to use during Bible time, so we were all reading the same version. They took turns reading sections and all participated in answering the questions orally. Frequently, they had questions of their own and by reading aloud, following along, answering questions and asking questions, they grew in their knowledge and understanding of the Old Testament beyond just the stories. We were sad to finish the book and wished there was a NT volume!
