Good program, Student materials feel wasteful
We're almost through the second book of this series, and heading into our third book. The student materials for this program include flash cards, a few extra sheets of "word banks" for the student to read, and some tags to mark the syllables, as well as a completion chart and stickers to mark your progress (which honestly is great for my kindergartner with their reading program, but my 8 year old who uses this program is beyond star charts). We use the tiles (part of the initial start-up kit), an we use the syllable tags, but the rest of the cards have proven useless for us. Not only is it cumbersome to actually tear out all of these cards and put them in order, but we have yet to actually use them. The same exact lists are in the teacher manual, and I find it much easier to use the teacher manual than to shuffle the cards. We will continue to use this program, but I think I'll start only purchasing the teacher guide and leaving the student materials out of it.

Best spelling program I've used in 10 years of homeschooling.
This is by far the best spelling program I've ever used. It's the only one that I've seen that actually teaches the student HOW to spell. I'm using it with 4 children at once (1st, 4th, 7th, and 8th grades). My youngest daughter is just starting spelling, and a couple of the others have been struggling spellers for years. The techniques in this program have helped immensely! My struggling spellers are making great strides and actually learning HOW to spell rather than just memorizing the words.

Love this spelling program!
I am amazed at how quickly my kids have excelled at spelling by using this program! It has the perfect amount of hands-on application to appease my kinesthetic learners while providing them with a solid understanding of spelling rules. I love that the lessons can be taught at the students pace and my kids love keeping up with the progress they've made on the included progress charts. I highly recommend!!

Great curriculum for my struggling speller
I have one natural speller and one struggling speller. We had tried spelling curriculums that are mostly list work, and they did nothing for my struggling speller. We started All About Spelling and he is doing much better! He only gets one or two words wrong each day now, compared to getting the majority of the words wrong with the previous curriculum. We flew through level one bc he is in third grade so a lot was review, but I'm glad we started at the beginning. All About Spelling explains all the rules of spelling in a clear and consistent way. My struggler is also one of those kids who needs to know the "why" behind everything, so he's enjoying knowing why words are spelled the way they are. Using the magnet letters has been a great visual for my kids also. It's another way to get the words stuck in their brain. :) So far, we have not used the file box with the cards because it seems like unnecessary busywork for me and just plain overkill. Maybe if I had started my kids on this in first grade we may have needed it? Not sure. Each of the kids has a spelling notebook that they write their daily words/sentences in and I keep track of which words/rules they are struggling with by paying attention to what they get wrong in their notebooks. Or I circle things and write notes in the teachers book as we go. We use the key cards every day though. They are awesome. I just keep them paper clipped inside my teachers book. I also love how there is little to no prep for me! The lessons are all direct teaching, but the book is so thorough, I can just pull out what I need and start teaching. I highly recommend this curriculum if you have struggling spellers!

Great program
We started using All About Spelling after my child showed huge regression over summer. The spelling program we were using mixed all the spellings for a sound (long i week- i/consonant/e, igh, ie, i, y) and it was too much for my son to keep track of. AAS takes each letter/ phonogram and teaches all the sounds it makes, but also teaches rules about when and why we use that phonogram. I also love that he is hearing the sounds, seeing them coded in different color letter tiles which helps him notice spelling patterns, and is moving the letter tiles so it incorporates many of his senses and keeps him attentive. I also throw in a little grammar review as we write the daily dictation sentences. I'll ask what type of sentence it is (question, statement, command) or what the subject, verb, or adjectives are. We have sped through the first 2 levels since he is a great reader in 4th grade and just needed to fill in gaps in learning, but are getting to a point where we will start taking it a little slower. We will definitely continue with this program. The teaching methods make so much sense to me.

If you have used, "100 Easy Lessons to Reading" then "All About Spelling: level 1" picks up where that left off. When done with Level 1 use Level 2. Second only to teaching a child to read is teaching a child the spelling rules. That way they don't have to memorize the spelling of a thousands of words, just learn the Phonograms, then learn the rules to apply.

Reading and spelling is accomplished.

My daughter did not learn all the rules to spelling, she learned mostly phonics and sight words. She's going into 4th still spelling words like she hears them. We're almost done with Level 1 which is too easy for her but we're in it for the rules like when to use c and k which this level teaches. I like how the lessons are already planned, short and it doesn't take much time. There is a lot of review throughout as well.

I have a third grader. We've been using Spelling Power, which is ok, but I'm thinking about switching. Could we start with Level 2, or would we need to begin with Level 1? She currently spells at a late second grade/early third grade level.
User on Jan 31, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I would start from the beginning. It is a great spelling curriculum and she will probably get through it quickly. It is very straight forward and works well for my dyslexic daughter. It has been my experience that when we switch books it is just better to start from the beginning so we can get acclimated to the new program.
Does this have the magnets needed to teach this level?
A shopper on Oct 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No it doesn’t. You have to order an Interactive kit to go along with it - either Item #050469 or Item#050470.

We got All about Spelling from Homeschool Expo from Rainbow Resource, we have gone through the 1st book. We love it and my grandson is doing so good. He is writing and remembering all the rules he is learning. We like the hands on magnetic letters and writing. Highly recommend this program to anyone.

We tried level 1 and it was working so well for my struggling reader/speller, so we moved on to level 2.

This was recommended by my child's certified academic language therapist as a good program for practice at home.

This spelling curriculum has helped my son so much. He's finally beginning to understand spelling rules and apply it to all his writing.

I have a third grader. We've been using Spelling Power, which is ok, but I'm thinking about switching. Could we start with Level 2, or would we need to begin with Level 1? She currently spells at a late second grade/early third grade level.

BEST ANSWER: No it doesn’t. You have to order an Interactive kit to go along with it - either Item #050469 or Item#050470.
