I like that ETC offers fairly independent practice for my 3rd grade son.
Malinda G on Oct 14, 2017
We have used ETC for 15 years and love it. The lessons are laid out typically the same so the child feels they know "how" to do the lessons, even though the words change. The illustrated activities work well with my learners who need to see context, and I am seeing improvements in their reading after each unit is finished. We will use this for all of our children.

We appreciate the simple way these books teach and reinforce critical reading skills.
Marina E on Aug 27, 2017
These are simple exercises which don't frustrate the student, especially those with learning difficulties.
Kim G on Aug 27, 2017
its the next one in the series and Im just going to keep using these books as reinforcement for reading. She loves them when she accomplishes them. But it really adds the extra tools needed that in my opinion the curriculums just dont do it justice...especially if you want a good reader.
Sharon R on Apr 6, 2017
We love this series for teaching phonics and fluent reading.
Stacy D on Mar 27, 2017
Explode the Code is great. I've used it for all of our 7 children. Covers various learning styles and helps reinforce phonics rules.
Rebekah D on Feb 18, 2017
"Explode the code has been THE single most effective way for my children to conceptualize, emphasize and practice-for-mastery their spelling words."
Donna H on Feb 9, 2017
Used them before with my other kids.
Lexdi B on Jan 26, 2017
I chose explode the code 6 to help reinforce the skills already learned for extra practice.

Next one in our curriculum.

My 2nd grader just started the Level 4 book and said it has been his favorite of all of them so far (he's been doing EtC since Levels A, B, C). I thought I'd keep going with them and see how they are.
Gwen P on Aug 20, 2016
I believe my kids are excellent spellers and readers due to the Explode the Code/Wordly Wise series. I have successfully used Explode the Code with my older two (now in Wordly Wise), and this purchase is for my youngest (age 8). The instructions are simple enough for him to read and understand, and each exercise is just long enough for his attention span.
Melissa M on Aug 19, 2016

Katie M on Apr 19, 2016
I have used these workbooks in the past and found them very helpful for phonics mastery. Love these books.
Sasha S on Apr 16, 2016
The Explode the Code series is a very parent and child friendly phonics and spelling supplement to any language arts program. The child needs little parent instruction so work can be done quite independently. I have used these great workbooks with 5 of my children and will continue to do so.

I have great experience with my Kindergartner and I wanted to boost up my 2nd graders phonics, so I am going with Explode the Code. I wish I would have started it with my older 2 as well. It is easy to follow and understand and the kids pick up the material quickly. Also, the workpages are simple and well laid out.
Kimberly K on Feb 2, 2016
We have been using ETC for years. My oldest completed the series and now my second is doing them as well. They are very effective at helping them learn the phonetics needed for proficient reading."
Yaile L on Jan 22, 2016
The Explode the Code series is well-known and recommended. The workbooks reinforce lessons from Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading, which we use. Since the lessons in our reading program don't match the sequence in the Explode the Code, I am buying all the levels at once.
Nyssa P on Jan 12, 2016
Love the program, kids love it@!
Laura G on Nov 8, 2015
I love Explode the Code books to help my kids learn to read and write. It reinforces the lessons by repeating the concepts taught over several different methods.
Tanya G on Oct 1, 2015
I have used Explode the Code with all my kids. They are good engaging workbooks to review basic phonetic rules.

my sister gave me an ETC 6.5 that she did not end up using. can I use that instead of book 6?
User on Nov 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I checked the tables of contents, and it looks like they cover the same sounds in each book. 6.5 does not have the three review lessons, but otherwise they seem to be similar (but different words and activities, so you can use both books without redundancy). So, unless your student needs to do both for review, I think you could just use 6.5. If you need review later, you can just do book 6 next.
Has anyone use the old version and the new version? Is there a big difference?
A shopper on Apr 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Per the publisher: Changes in the 2nd edition Workbooks and Teacher Guides: In Workbooks: 1) revised student directions for clarity and ease of understanding; 2) Updated content to clarify previously confusing or problematic examples; 3) Stories in Books 7 and 8 were revised and replaced with new content. In Teacher Guides: 1. "Lesson Routine at a Glance" chart is featured on the inside front cover of all guides. 2. Chart presents essential literacy skills and the systematic process in which ETC implements them. Artwork Updates: Updated images throughout the program to eliminate obsolete and confusing images as well as reflect the 21st century culture. After reviewing/comparing, there are minimal changes. A few graphics have changed and the upper level books (6 and up) have some expanded instruction. Page numbers align between editions. 2nd ed. address CCSS but does not align lessons to the CC; it also describes the program as O-G (if complete activities in TG)-additional requirements to be OG are the ETC Code Cards and the online activities (fee based);for a comprehensive program, the TG recommends 15-20 min. direct phonics instruction, plus literacy activities reading stories, chapter books, and non fiction selections. Also recommended are writing, grammar, spelling and oral work, but they make no recommendations. The 2nd ed also has some font changes in the student samples (more traditional). There are updated stories in books 7 and 8.
