helpful for a struggling reader
This very systematic approach to reading has helped my struggling reader to make good progress. As an example of the level of systematic detail, two lessons were devoted to how to read words consisting of two syllables containing two vowels separated by a single consonant. The first lesson taught the more common syllabification pattern, in which the first syllable is open (i.e. first vowel is long), in such words as "hero" and "item". The second lesson taught the less common pattern, in which the first syllable is closed (i.e. first vowel is short), such as "seven" and "finish". It also taught the rule for which pattern to use- try the more common syllable division pattern, and if that does not make a word, try the less common pattern. It was exciting to see my struggling reader able to read significantly more two syllable words after these lessons that he had previously. As well, the emphasis on fluency and multi sensory approach are helpful.
This said, the program may be overkill for some learners. I have had two children who didn't even complete "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" and then transitioned by themselves to reading chapter books. All About Reading is relatively expensive and teacher intensive, so you may wish to try a cheaper and easier curriculum first and only use this program if your child is not making good progress in reading.

Finally success
My 8-year old son has struggled for his early years of reading instruction. I could see the frustration in his eyes and the confusion when rules just didn't work. The first thing he did when we opened the box was grab the new reader. He thought it was too thick and he was not excited. But, I told him it was a special reader that works for all the rules he has learned. He is thrilled. He reads it on his own just for fun and says "Finally, something I can read myself". He says he likes reading now.

I am a public school teacher turned homeschooling mom and this is, by far, the best reading program i have ever seen. My children love the stories! This program is wonderful for going at the child's pace and reviewing any concepts that may be difficult.

This program is such a blessing for my daughter
When my daughter asked me, "why doesn't "have" make the 'a' say it's own name when it has a silent e?", I knew I would need a curriculum that could answer questions like this.
Now she has more answers and confidence. She's reading very well!

BEST ANSWER: I really love this program, but my daughter is also a very strong reader and she became bored with it quickly. I would consider either going up a level (check with the placement tests on their site) or choose something else. The benefits are that you mostly read together, play games, and go over flashcards...so the writing is minimal. I found this program works best with my son who isn't quite as strong of a reader and needs repetition and more hands on activities.
So does the AAR Level 2 materials for $119.95 come with everything I need for my 1st grader? Flash cards, activity book, readers, etc.?
A shopper on Mar 31, 2016
BEST ANSWER: You can buy things separately or as a group. The first time you purchase that grade I suggest you buy the group material. If you have a child following the first, then all that will be needed is a new workbook. Hope this helps. Loved this for my dyslexic granddaughter. but after homeschooling my own 6 kids, this curriculum is much more time consuming. "Hands on helps" with different learners.
Is level 2 more at a first grade level or a second grade level?
A shopper on Sep 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I don't know because All About Learning Press says they don't go by grade levels. However, I believe there are assessments online that you can give your child to see which level would best suit them. There are only 4 levels and by the time that's complete they will have all the tools they need in the "learning to read" phase of education. We're just about done level 4 and my son is reading very well. Hope this helps until someone with more "expertise" chimes in!
My daughter is 6 and can already read very well (about 3rd grade level.) Should I choose a different curriculum?
A shopper on Sep 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This is just my personal opinion, but if she's already reading that well, I would suggest simply reading--don't even bother with a reading "curriculum" at this point. That's what I've done after completing AAR level 2 (I haven't continued on to the higher levels). However, when you're ready to start working with her on spelling, I would highly recommend All About Spelling! It is very thorough, logical, and teaches to all sorts of learning styles!
Hi! We're on track to finish Level 1, Second Edition in a couple of months.... I've heard that 1st and 2nd editions don't quite match up. Is this also the case with 2nd and 3rd editions?
Sara M on Jan 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: We went from level 1 first edition to level 2 second edition- the transition was seamless. 2nd edition is really great- it adds more comprehension questions and activities to go with the stories and a better variety of activities.

"I used the previous level and it worked very well with my daughter. I wish I would have found them for my older children." There isn't a lot of prep time involved most of the time it is a quick read through then teach the lesson, maybe 5 minutes.

Because I've used the Ready to Read and Level 1 and it is the only curriculum that has helped my dyslexic son learn to read (I have tried 4 others)

My Daughter is finishing AAR Level 1

We've tried at least 3 reading programs. This is labor-intensive, but it is by far the least frustrating for all with the best results! Make sure you buy a magnetic whiteboard, and you're good to go ...

    Purchasing the next level!

my child needs help with reading the first level seems to be working so I wanted the next level before we finish the first one.

We used All About Reading Level 1 and I liked it. The first couple lessons, I was a little overwhelmed with how much they wanted the child to fit into each lesson, but it was a learning curve on my part.

My daughter is 6 and is already reading very well (about 3rd grade level.) Would she benefit from this curriculum, or should I choose something else? I don't want her to be bored, but I also don't want to skip over anything that she needs to know. Thank you!

BEST ANSWER: You can buy things separately or as a group. The first time you purchase that grade I suggest you buy the group material. If you have a child following the first, then all that will be needed is a new workbook. Hope this helps. Loved this for my dyslexic granddaughter. but after homeschooling my own 6 kids, this curriculum is much more time consuming. "Hands on helps" with different learners.
Is level 2 more at a first grade level or a second grade level?

BEST ANSWER: I don't know because All About Learning Press says they don't go by grade levels. However, I believe there are assessments online that you can give your child to see which level would best suit them. There are only 4 levels and by the time that's complete they will have all the tools they need in the "learning to read" phase of education. We're just about done level 4 and my son is reading very well. Hope this helps until someone with more "expertise" chimes in!
My daughter is 6 and can already read very well (about 3rd grade level.) Should I choose a different curriculum?
