Description

Discover the true meaning of Thanksgiving right along with Molly, a Russian refugee. Molly doesn't look like the other children at school and her English isn't very good, making her the subject of much teasing. To make matters worse, her mother makes her doll for their Thanksgiving project look more like a Russian refugee than a New England Pilgrim. However, that tiny little doll is exactly what she needed to show her classmates that she is a modern day Pilgrim, too! The detailed pencil artwork beautifully portrays the main points of the tale. A thought-provoking story that would be great to read aloud to your children and discuss. Pb, 28 pgs. elise

The best books written to entertain young children have to contain text that is somewhat interactive, an interesting storyline, and a problem situation that most children can identify. This book must have had all the ingredients, because it was one of our absolute favorites when we were very young. Throughout the book, Grover (of Sesame Street fame) continues to panic because the title suggests that there is going to be a monster waiting for him at the end of the book. He attempts various constructions to halt the "page-turning" that will inevitably bring the monster closer, and as the pages are turned, the book turns into a bigger and bigger mess. Of course, the end is a surprise for kids, and continues to delight them every time the story is read. If you don't have this Little Golden Book already, I highly recommend it - may yours become as dog-eared as ours! - Jess

Publisher's Description of Molly's Pilgrim

A modern Thanksgiving classic about an immigrant girl who comes to identify with the story of the Pilgrims, as she seeks religious freedom and a home in a new land. Now with a gorgeous new cover and lovely interior illustrations.

As Molly nears her first Thanksgiving in the New World, she doesn't find much to be thankful for. Her classmates giggle at her accent and make fun of her unfamiliarity with American ways.

And Molly's mother only makes things worse when she creates a doll for a school Thanksgiving project that looks more like a Russian refugee than a New England Pilgrim. But the tiny modern-day pilgrim just might help Molly to find a place for herself in America.

The touching story tells how recent immigrant Molly leads her third-grade class to discover that it takes all kinds of pilgrims to make a Thanksgiving. Originally published in 1983, Molly's Pilgrim inspired the 1986 Academy Award-winning live-action short film.
