Online resources are great!
The text is well written and engaging. The biggest surprise was all the online content. Everything you will need to fully teach Biology. My son loves the fill in outline/ study guide and I like the quizzes, tests and lab content.

This is a great Biology course. With the online link there is so much you can access including chapter tests, interactive activities and virtual labs, just to name a few.

Excellent Kit. Very complete.
The home school kit includes the student text, and online resources that are extensive and necessary. A very good complete Biology course with great content and illustrations, a good pace, schedule, and with all supporting material online for teacher and student. I am very pleased.

Our hired science instructor wasn't working out for us so I needed an all-in-one quickly. This had great reviews and the multi-media aspect and labs look just right for my independent learner.

If I purchase this now for one child, can I renew the online content 2-3 years later when a younger sibling is ready to take the course? Or do I have to purchase the whole package again.
BEST ANSWER: Yes, you can "renew" the content when you're ready to use the course with the younger sibling. You purchase - #062517 - for that renewal. The only liability is if the course has "gone away" in the meantime.

Is the online portion good for 12 months from purchase date or is the online portion activated with a code by the parent at any chosen date in time? Thank you!
BEST ANSWER: The 12 month subscription starts when the online portion is activated. So, the course can be purchase in the spring but not activated until the fall. The twelve months will then run fall to fall.

Does the book come with a dvd?
BEST ANSWER: The book doesn't come with a DVD. You get online access for 1 year to a variety of components, including an online version of the book, animations, tests and quizzes (which are also graded automatically, with your option to override grades), teacher's book, educational adjuncts such as flash cards, question-and-answer challenges, online labs, and many other things that could not be on a DVD.

Are the labs all online? Is there no lab work for the student to do at home (dissections, etc.)?
BEST ANSWER: There are virtual labs that are part of the online resources. All labs could be done at home if preferred. However, equipment and supplies can be difficult to obtain.

How does the interactive reader sound? Robotic or audiobook style? Does all the main text have interactive reader capabilities?
BEST ANSWER: The reader sounds like an audiobook. There are two narrators, one male, one female. I'm not sure what you mean by interactive. Be more specific and I'll do my best to answer.

If two students are sharing this text, can they both use the online feature for quizzes/ tests etc.?
BEST ANSWER: Although I only have one student using this text, I believe that it is definitely possible for two students to use the online features. A lot of the online components are printable pieces, and those that are completely online activities/features (virtual labs and investigations, etc.) can always be reset. So, although they (probably) could not be both be logged in and working on the online components at the exact same time, the students could each do everything that is available.

One of the answers to the question "Why did you choose this?" was because of a schedule. Can you please elaborate? I am seeing that it is broken down to chapters, but is it realistic to think this can be done in 36 weeks?
BEST ANSWER: I did not choose it for schedule, but my 9th grader has worked her way through it. I do not think this book is realistically finished in 36 weeks, assuming the book is part of a high school curriculum. Our goal was a chapter a week, but some chapters were much more involved than others. Then, if you account for time off, it extends the schedule. We were far more interested in our student mastering the material than getting through at a certain speed. She was able to do so in about 3 semesters (give or take a few weeks). Our 9th grader was motivated, as she enjoys Biology and found this book to be concise, interesting, and connected to good digital content. Maybe for a student that has fewer subjects to balance, or if you were to "skim" some chapters, then 36 weeks is manageable.

BEST ANSWER: You do not need any other curriculum to go with this course. It is very well rounded. The online portion has full labs and experiments. My son successfully took the biology sat after using this course. Very very thorough.

is the online edition hard for parents to navigate?
BEST ANSWER: I would say it is not hard to use, but it is not intuitive either. Once you click around a few times and familiarize yourself with the layout, it becomes easy to find what you want. But the first time, it is a little overwhelming. Give yourself a day or day to check it out and you will do fine or in my case just have your kids show you how to do it.

Does this program include tests that I could give to assess my daughter's understanding of the concepts?
BEST ANSWER: Includes Online section quiz, chapter test, unit test, standardized assessments, answer keys, virtual labs, interactive readers, videos, animations, self checks, vocabulary , study guides, worksheets ... etc. - - all online. After purchase of the Book (kit) you can obtain a code to enroll and and create a user ID and password at Holt online to access all of these online resources.
