I have successfully taught 3 children to read and write English and one of whom was ESL I am very pleased with the resultsThese finger books are a compliment to the program for me they are a must have though the handbook is enough I didn't have any trouble with the differences in the way we pronounce words at home and the British variant I just pointed it out and it was no big dealPerhaps my kids (homeschooled) being used to hearing English spoken with a variety of accents because we live in a high expat population environment it was just as well to find it so in the booksThe finger books provide glossy engaging 2 page spread pictures to introduce each letter soundThey are hard cover books and provide much of the visual kinaesthetic and auditory part of the programme I usually introduced each letter sound with the finger book The kids' attention would be held by the picture while I told the introduction storyI always tweaked this story to our taste using themes and adding characters my kids could relate tooThe letter sound would come up in the story which I followed up with the song in the jingles and the letter sound actionEach page had a grooved outline of the letter in lower case as well as words to practice blending The kids loved tracing the grooves I guess for the novelty of the feeling as well as for seeing if they would get it right The grooves have arrows showing how to form the letters and after a few demonstration s they caught on intuitively but they were so pleased to be applauded for something they thought they did all by themselves so much that letter formation became another highlight of the day second only the story the song and action It was so effective my daughter learnt all the letter sounds at the age of 25yrsInfact one of the best things about jolly phonics is that its not rigidIt's delivery is easily adjusted to meet the pupil's Learning styleWith the handbook I had to prepare each lesson I did not start teaching reading and writing simultaneously I did just reading till each was read CVC words then I started teaching how to form the letters in the same sequence s a t while learning the digraph sounds Jolly phonics now has a variant presentation The handbook has sort of been split into a teachers manual and a pupil book which has reduced teacher prep down to very littleThe teacher book has all the valuable instruction about how to teach phonics as well as daily lesson plans for 3 pupil books The 3 pupil books have all the necessary components blending writing decoding tricky words in ready made lessons It removes the need for teacher preparation but reduces flexibility I like having both I love love jolly phonics
