Description

A child’s first exposure to science should be fun and engaging. Ideally, it should not overwhelm, but present something they can enjoy at their own pace. Animal Kingdom fulfills all these ideals and more. Written to be self-pacing, this mastery-based science program engages children with its vibrantly-colored illustrations, clearly explained text and easy to do activities. Focusing on the idea of animal groupings and classes, children learn about birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, insects, and arachnids. Children are also introduced to the differences between warm-blooded or cold-blooded and vertebrate or invertebrate animals. Written from a religiously neutral perspective, the text contains no references to evolution or intelligent design.

The softcover student book contains 15 chapters. Designed to promote independent learning, the text is written to the student. Depending on reading abilities, parents may need to read alongside their budding readers. Age-appropriate language and examples enable children to understand basic biology concepts. This publication is also filled with full-color illustrations. Chapters range from 2-10 pages each. The self-paced Student Learning Guide provides a succinct chapter reading and activity check list, with a place for a “Teacher Check-in” at the end of each section. Since this is self-paced, there are no daily assignments. Activities vary, but include finding locations on a globe, journaling, drawing/sketching, finding pictures or going outside to find an animal, and using the included Animal Kingdom Cards. Additional supplies are needed for the activities. These include a notebook or journal, modeling clay, picture books or magazines, a thermometer, crayons/colored pencils or markers and 20 items to sort. Estimated time for the Learning Guide activities is 10 hours, although this is flexible depending on student age or abilities. The Teacher Resources include the material list and information about the materials, an overview of the publisher philosophy, the exam (with answers), and a Certificate of Achievement. Assessment is oral and includes the reference chapter if review is necessary to master material. One of the neatest components of this set is the Animal Kingdom cards. Each of the glossy cards features a full-color illustration of an animal on one side and fun facts such as the animal's class on the reverse. Use them to learn more about various animals, create games or use as a helpful template for art projects. Measure 5”x 6”.

Sold only as a set, which includes the Text, the Student Learning Guide, Teacher Resources, Exam (and Answers), and the Animal Kingdom Cards. ~Deanne
