Enriching our studies, simply and effectively!
We have incorporated Five In A Row with our core subjects to add variety and interest for our elementary students in co-op classes. The students are enjoying the stories and activities. The teachers are able to easily find activities that fit our setting and group. It is also simple to add more if you have other ideas you want to use. Very flexiible and solid education resource.

The program is useful for busy people.
This is my first time venturing into the world of home schooling, so I'm new. My impression of this manual is that it basically encourages parents to find different things to talk about in each of the books. For example, in a book featuring a map, the manual encourages parents to talk about maps. In a book featuring a grandparent/grandchild relationship, the manual encourages parents to talk about grandparents. I think a lot of this could be pretty intuitive--just talk about different things in the books that you read. However, for people who are busy and do not have the emotional energy to figure out different things to say about each book, this could be a useful tool.

We are loving FIAR!
Our family is loving the Unit Study approach with the guidance of Five in a Row. We are using it with our 7 and 9 year olds this year. It feels so much more cohesive than trying to use a random curriculum for science, history, art, etc. Highly recommend!

Love it!
I wasn't sure at first because I didn't understand what a unit study was and it looked like it was antique without the vibrant modern colors and designs. I have been blown away with this spiral book jam packed with great activities and questions to ask about THE BEST books that she carefully selected that both my daughter and I just love. Seriously it's a must purchase. It's not even as expensive as other unit studies that don't have the quality that this book does. It's a great deal.

So much fun!
I am using FIAR with a group of ten, Kindergarten to 2nd graders next year. I am using the summer to plan and read the books. I found all the books at the library except two. I am so excited for next year and it's only April!

Fabulous for multi-kid families
We've been using FIAR for about six weeks with three kids aged 6.5 (grade 2), 4 (PK) and 18 months. It's been a fantastic interdisciplinary but literature rich program. We supplement with math, science and writing programs but FIAR is a great jumping off point for explorations of language, art, geography, culture and more! We have purchased a few favourite titles and others we've been able to access through our library, so this also gets my approval as a very cost-effective program.

When my daughter changed from AAR pre-reading level, to level 1, it kinda lost the joy, and I missed the unit study approach that didn't seem to carry over to the next level. We are continuing that curriculum at this time, but adding FIAR in hopes it will reintroduce a little more joy in the journey of learning and unit studies.

What edition is this?
A shopper on Oct 19, 2017
BEST ANSWER: There is only a single edition of Five in a Row, Volume 1. However, several years ago the books were updated with new covers and spiral binding. We carry the updated cover edition.
Does book one cover a whole school year? Or do we need to buy all 4 books for a complete year?
Megan C on Apr 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: From the Five in a Row website: First of all, in the real world of home schooling few families study more than 30-35 weeks per year after holidays, illnesses, vacations, etc. So if you were to work straight through it would take about 2 school years to complete the FIAR lessons. But, with early learners you’re going to choose only one, or at most 2 of the simplest activities. Make a note of which lessons you’ve completed in the margin of your teacher’s manual and then when your children are a bit older you can come back a RE-visit this familiar, beloved story and complete the several other lessons you didn’t use the first time through.
Who did the video review for 5 in a row?
A shopper on Jul 18, 2016

Is the manual all I need?
Kendra P on Feb 5, 2016
BEST ANSWER: You can check out all these books at the library if you want to save money and that way all you need is the manual. My sister in law does it that way. However, if the library doesn't have the book, you have to be somewhat flexible with what story you do that week. I bought the manual and the book package mainly because it seemed more convenient and I wanted to add to our home library anyway. The books are wonderful! We read them over and over! Part of the reason why I'm happy we bought the package. Hope this helps :)
