Loyd and Matt Whitling, teaches students how to hear blends, clusters, and vowel sounds and introduces 5 important rules which are reviewed throughout the books. The lists are cumulative, which allows students to review words throughout the year, and each lesson features dictation sentences that allow even more practice.

Instead, Grammar of Spelling is a program that teaches the most important spelling rules based on useful spelling lists and simple, effective exercises. Its strengths are in its cumulative spelling lists and dictation sentences. When a young student learns to hear each part of a basic root word, spelling becomes a simple matter of using the building blocks of reading and phonics.
Each lesson has the students write the list four times. Students repeat the words, put the words in alphabetical order, write the words from memory, and write them in cursive.

Maximizing the desire of children to acquire new skills, the black and white, consumable workbooks in Grades 2-3 teach them how to integrate phonics rules into the spelling process through hearing and dictation. Sight words and homophones are also included. The workbooks are a compilation of worksheet exercises that emphasize a specific grouping of words that need to be alphabetized and written in print or cursive. In Grades 4-6, more advanced general spelling rules are emphasized, as well as material covering prefixes, suffixes, and homophones. Lessons introduce 5 important rules which are reviewed throughout the book. Word lists are cumulative, with words reviewed throughout the year. Lessons are designed to take about 30 minutes a day. Monday through Wednesday students work on dictation exercises and worksheets, and then complete testing from their weekly word list on Thursday and Friday. Student Workbooks are self-contained and include student worksheets, teaching instructions, weekly lesson plan, a master list of spelling words and more.
