SAAB JAS 39 Gripen is a modern, Swedish light multi-role fighter produced by the SAAB aviation company in co-production with BAE Systems. The name of the Gripen aircraft refers to the SAAB coat of arms, which emphasizes the multi-tasking nature of the aircraft. The abbreviation JAS was created from words in Swedish meaning: Jakt - hunting, Attack - assault, Spaning - reconnaissance. The Gripen is a high-performance, multi-purpose machine capable of doing any of these tasks. The configuration of the wings in the delta configuration allows it to reach high speeds. The take-off and landing distance, as specified, is only 800m.
The fighter has been produced and developed since 1987. The export version "C", according to the specification of the NATO countries, has been produced since 2003. The planes were used by the Czech, Hungarian, Swedish, South African, Thai and Brazilian air forces. In Great Britain, Gipens are used as training planes at The Empire Test Pilots' School.
