First of all, I need to say the Five in a Row volumes are an amazing tool for our family, and the Christian Character Supplement is no exception. If you are familiar with FIAR, then you know that the books selected are outstanding and full of all things that make a good book touch your heart. The idea of the Christian Supplement is like the icing on the cake for what is already an exceptional family experience. If you are interested in taking the FIAR books and measuring the characters and situations they find themselves in against what Scripture has to say, then this guide is your chance.
I would say that the Christian Supplement is easy to use, and much simpler than the volumes themselves . . . mostly using one page, it cuts right to the chase: Scripture discussion. It is handy to have your Bible, and to have read the book prior, so you can talk through the meaning based on what the book is about. For example, in Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, the traits discussed are flexibility, trusting God, willingness to serve, graciousness, stewardship. . .and makes reference to the Bible using verses from Matthew, Philippians, Luke, and John. All of these are done is easy to use paragraphs.
From my experience, it seems to me that if the child is able to grasp the book's storyline, then it is almost easier for them to then grasp the Christian character examples because they have had a personal experience through the books. I definitely do not think that I could have come up with so many different character aspects backed with Scripture like this guide has done.
It is a great thing to have this type of Godly reference to add to the already meaningful experience using FIAR books. Well worth it!
