My 5 year old son absolutely loved the grade 1 workbook. It was a very fun way to learn about map directions. It was also a good intro to the U.S. map and reading map legends. He knew north, south, west and east directions before this workbook, but this really reinforced it so he knows his directions very well now. He loved the character in the book and liked following along on the little adventures. No teacher prep is needed. Answers are provided in the back of the book. It was totally worth the price. We look forward to doing the next workbook in this series.

As homeschoolers, we often like to look at integrating our subjects, and I know that many of us like to work geography in with other studies, such as history and current events. However, there comes a time when a little focused practice is in order, and these are just the books to boost your children's map skills. These slim, colorful workbooks take your children through practice in reading various types of maps, introducing them to directions, the compass rose, map symbols, grids, and more. Along the way, they will glean bits of information about the states and countries represented on the various political, climate, time zone, and natural resource maps utilized for the practice exercises. Still, the real value of these books is in the practice of reading the maps and learning to extract information from them. In our homeschool, we use one of these books for each child each year. We are currently using the 2nd, 4th and 6th grade books. We do not give these books much time or emphasis, but each Friday morning, my children pull out their map books and each works through one lesson... and they enjoy them! The lessons are brief (and the answer keys are in the back of the book), but that little bit of weekly practice has translated into improved map skills when they are required for those fun integrated studies we all love so much!
