One Small Square: Backyard
Additional Details
Category Description for One Small Square Books
At last! In paperback! Explore the different places in our world, with a close-up view, one small square at a time. This series is excellent for many reasons. First, by concentrating on one, small square, it presents each environment in a manageable piece; making it less overwhelming and more personal for children than looking at the whole. Each book has them stake out just one, small square which they will explore, like scientists, discovering all they can about that ecosystem and the wildlife that inhabits it. Secondly, the books are highly interactive - an exquisite blend of textual information and activities, in a very conversational tone. Third, the writing is excellent. Fourth, the full-color illustrations are beautiful and inspiring. At the back of each volume is a short picture field guide to the habitat, followed by an index and resource list. Longtime classics for young naturalists, these books are now more affordable. The books are a 9” x 9” format - one small square.
Customer Review
I love this series of books from Donald Silver! One Small Square: Woods shows students what goes on in just a small square space in the woods. It teaches the student to observe and examine all parts of this square, from the obvious--like the bark on the trees, to the hidden--like the seeds on the ground under the fallen leaves. It goes into detail appropriate for an elementary student, without overwhelming them. There are even activities throughout the book such as using fallen leaves to make a leaf print, examining the soil and the varying layers of it, to making a 'rubbing' on tree bark. This series is wonderful! My son especially loves the colorful pictures and always tells me not to turn the page because he's still looking! It's a great addition to any science program!
