4.8 / 5.04 Reviews5 Stars4 Stars3 Stars2 Stars1 Stars31000Easy to UnderstandSaxon Math does an awesome job explaining math concepts and breaking things down in a simple to understand way. It reminds me of how my college Algebra teacher, who was from China, taught. After years of struggling, I finally understood Algebra! That's how amazed I am with Saxon Math. Math is math, but everything depends on HOW it's explained. My 6th grader has a talent for math (let's not talk about Grammar, though). He's proficient in so many concepts which placed him in Algebra 1/2, but he was also missing a few important things the public school skipped over. He was able to pick up this book and fill in the gaps, because the explanations are easy for him to follow. I'm so thankful the beginning of this book repeated every concept he should have already learned, or I wouldn't have known to spend extra time teaching him long division and decimals. Now that he's mastered those, he's continued on with the book, and is doing great. I will continue to use Saxon Math with him and his 1st grade brother, because I am that impressed! Oh, and his dad's happy, cause it was created by an Army vet. He calls it "Manly Math". Was this review helpful? Yes (0) No (0)

Like it!I'm an overall fan of this curriculum. We just switched this year and I like it. I'm used to curriculum that has an answer key that matches the students paper with the answers written in. This is a bit confusing to grade. Was this review helpful? Yes (4) No (0)

There are reproducible facts practice and tests that the kids write on, but it's a textbook so no space to write answers and show work. (Different than Singapore Math)

There is not quite enough room in the book to work out all the problems. I recommend notebook paper or even graphing paper to work out the problems. Keep in mind that you do not have to rewrite every word problem. Reply

You would not write in the book. It is hard bound and doesn't have room to work out the problem. You would need to do your work on a separate sheet of paper. Reply

You can't write in the book. All the answers and figuring have to be completed in a notebook. Not the best. House for kids with handwriting issues. Reply

The student writes and solves the math problems on a piece of paper. The book is a textbook rather than a workbook. Reply

Vote for the best answer above!Does the test packet in the Algebra 1/2 include chapter tests only, or is it like lower levels and includes daily multiplication/division/addition/subtraction facts tests?A shopper on Mar 9, 2016BEST ANSWER: Just the chapter tests. If you are interested in facts practice you may want to go with Saxon 8/7 which is very similar to Algebra 1/2 covering the same math concepts with more explaination and practice like the lower levels. Saxon Algebra 1/2 does not include the daily fact practice sheets or the mental math assignments of the previous volumes. Daily "new concept" a, b, c style numbered problems, and the usual 30 problem practice sets are included as well as tests. All the answers available in the teacher's book in this kit. FYI, my son decided he loved math the year we used Saxon 1/2...but you should be aware it is a little easier actually than 8/7 in my opinion. It is a good option for a student who isn't ready for Algebra I and could use some review and increased confidence, but it does mostly repeat concepts from 8/7. Reply

The test packet actually only includes 31 tests. A test is given after every 4 lessons taught. There are no daily fact tests with Algebra 1/2. There is plenty of review associated with each lesson but it's essential the basic facts are mastered at this point. My son is a "math kid" and is definitely challenged with the program. In his words, "There's a lot of review but all of the problems are hard". I hope that helps. Reply

The test packet is just the test which they take every four lessons or in my child's case once a week. It is twenty questions and goes over everything they learn. Because there is not a daily fact test this is good just to keep it all fresh. Reply

Vote for the best answer above! Is this edition changed to follow common core standards?A shopper on Nov 21, 2015BEST ANSWER: It isn't aligned to the new Common Core, but don't let that dissuade you from purchasing! Saxon covers all concepts in a spiral methodology, with more than enough examples and practice problems with solutions, to aide even students with learning difficulties. Saxon is very easy to teach because of the format. The practice sheets, mental math, practice problems with the teacher, and then the student problems, is an excellent approach for students to retain what they learn. Reply
