A revised and expanded edition of First Grammar Lessons by Charlotte Mason, authored by Karen Andreola. Truly a gentle, friendly, but thorough approach to grammar without all of the tedious workbooking - in the true spirit of Charlotte Mason. Karen has retained the soul of the book while updating it for us, replacing obscure words and giving us larger, crisper type, but using turn-of-the century illustrations and vine-bordered pages. The book embraces an interactive approach to grammar, accomplished, for the most part, orally. It is a natural, uncomplicated method - you simply sit down with your child and this book and teach. Lessons are to be completed at the rate of one per week, in short, 10-15 minute sessions. One rule is taught per lesson. The 46 lessons here, along with the additional exercises in the appendices, should supply a year of pleasurable instruction.

This is a wonderful resource for the Charlotte Mason educator. It makes learning grammar painless. My son reads the text and we do the exercises together orally-all snuggled up together on our comfy couch! No preparation is necessary-simply pick up the book and start reading where you left off. You can't beat the expense as this book is all you need for grammar up until high school. We go through the book every other year starting around 3rd or 4th grade. I love everything Karen Andreola and have never been disappointed with anything she has written or recommended!

Although this is considered a Charlotte Mason text, I did use it to supplement our Well-Trained Mind's grammar recommendation of First Language Lessons. The book is intended for ages 9 and up; however, I used this with my 2nd grader after he'd already finished First Language Lessons 1 & 2. The brief lessons were very easy for him to follow. This is an oral grammar book (i.e. no writing or workbook pages whatsoever, though you could add them if you felt you needed to). This was very mom-friendly to use as well. Overall, a good supplemental grammar book.

Simply Grammar was an answer to my dreams! I spent a year and a half searching for a curriculum that taught good, solid grammar skills, yet allowed my child to learn them in a fun, relaxed setting. The art work in this volume is simply lovely, to say the least. The details provide so much for the children to describe as they practice their newly learned parts of speech. The pace is even and enjoyable. Most of the work is oral, with a couple of written sentences per lesson. I was amazed as we began. My 6 1/2 year old daughter (who is a good reader) created FIFTY THREE (yes 53!) sentences as she learned the difference between subjects and predicates - all in her first lesson! The lesson only took about 15 minutes, and that was with ordinary home interruptions. We did the lesson sitting on the living room couch. When we were done, we thought perhaps she had come up with about 15 or 20 sentences. Even she was amazed to count what she had orally composed. At the end of the lesson she asked "Can we keep going?" There are additional exercises in the back of the book for students who need more help in any area, or if you wanted to do more than 1 lesson per week. One of my favorite parts about this book is the complete lack for the need of preparation. There are no lesson plans to write, and no materials to arrange. Simply sit down, open the book, and enjoy! Further, it's a very wise economic investment. Most of the work is oral, and all written assignments can be done in any notebook or on loose leaf paper. The book can be used again and again. It can also be used with children of different ages simultaneously. We love this book, and highly recommend it to anyone who wants their children to become proficient at writing while loving to learn!
